Visiting Xiamen in July
July weather in Xiamen
July is hot and sticky, with daytime highs around 31°C and high humidity. Showers are common, but they don't usually rule out a whole day. Keep indoor stops like the Xiamen Museum or Nanputuo Temple in mind for rainy spells.
The heat makes long walks feel tiring, especially around exposed Gulangyu. Save shaded lanes and indoor sights for the middle of the day, and enjoy the coast when the sun feels less fierce. A beach visit can still work, but don't count on a cool, dry afternoon.
Summer crowds and events
July brings China's school summer break, so families visit Xiamen and Gulangyu gets busy. There's no major nationwide public holiday in July, but holiday travel still lifts crowds and prices above the quieter months. October to January is a better bet if you want milder days and fewer visitors.
If you hate crowds, spend more time around Shapowei's cafés and waterfront, then visit Gulangyu on a weekday. Xiamen's local food is a good rainy-day plan: try peanut soup near Zhongshan Road or ginger duck in a sit-down restaurant.
Make the ferry part of the plan
For Gulangyu, take the tourist ferry from the Xiagu wharf to Sanqiutian. The crossing gives you a breezy break from the city, but queues can build in summer. Once you arrive, duck into the narrow lanes for shade rather than trying to cover the whole island in one hot stretch.
Travelling with kids? The ferry ride and Gulangyu's car-free streets can make a fun outing, but keep the visit short if the afternoon feels oppressive. July also sees frequent rain, so a sudden shower may interrupt beach time or sightseeing. Use the Xiamen metro to get back across town without adding another long, sweaty walk.
