Visiting Xiamen in November
Mild days outdoors
November sits inside Xiamen's best stretch, October to January, and it feels mild rather than hot. Afternoons are comfortable for walking, and evenings turn cooler. Rain falls on several days, but this isn't a washout month, and you'll get some sunshine between the cloudy spells.
Those breaks in the weather are good for exploring Gulangyu's lanes, visiting Nanputuo Temple, or walking part of the Huandao Road coastal route. When the rain does settle in, long outdoor plans can feel like a chore, so keep a museum or café in Siming District as a backup. The sea may feel too cool for swimming, so November suits walking better than a full beach day.
A quieter month
With the weather this pleasant, crowds are the next thing to think about. November has no major national public holiday in China, so you're unlikely to hit the travel rush that comes with October's National Day holiday. Xiamen is still popular, but sights such as Gulangyu generally feel calmer than they do during holiday periods.
If you hate crowds, you'll probably find November easier than October's holiday week. It's also outside the busiest holiday dates, so fares and hotel rates may be less pressured. Xiamen stays in its strong autumn-to-winter travel season, though, so don't expect the city to feel empty.
Make Gulangyu easy
For a relaxed island visit, take the visitor ferry from Xiamen International Cruise Center to Sanqiutian Pier. It puts you near many of Gulangyu's best-known lanes and sights. Don't head to the downtown ferry terminal by habit, since visitor boats use the cruise center.
Once you're back on the mainland, November is a good time for local seafood, without the sticky summer heat to plan around. Try a bowl of satay noodles, a Xiamen favourite, after walking around Zhongshan Road. And if a rainy spell rolls in, take it as your cue to slow down over lunch.
