Visiting Chaozhou in August
August: hot, damp days
August in Chaozhou feels sticky from morning to evening. The high is 30°C, and humidity reaches 87%. Rain falls on 21 days, often interrupting plans, while cloud and limited sunshine can make the city feel close and muggy.
You can still explore Kaiyuan Temple or Paifang Street, but keep indoor stops handy for heavy showers. Save longer walks for breaks in the rain, and skip exposed hikes or a full day outdoors. July is just as hot and a little less wet; September stays just as hot but brings less rain.
What to do between showers
If you love food, use a wet afternoon to settle in for Chaozhou beef hotpot or a slow gongfu tea session. The covered streets around Paifang Street make it easier to duck inside when rain starts. Travelling with kids? The old town's compact sights are easier to manage than a long day in the open.
August may include the Zhongyuan Festival, also called the Ghost Festival, which falls in the seventh lunar month. Its date changes each year, so it doesn't always land in August. Don't count on a major festival during your visit.
Crowds and local tips
August falls in China's summer school holiday, so family visitors can make popular sights busier than in the quieter December-to-February period. Expect stronger demand for rooms and transport than in those winter months, though August isn't Chaozhou's best season for comfortable sightseeing.
For Guangji Bridge, go during the day and check the local opening arrangements before setting out. Its central pontoon section is removed in the evening to let boats pass, so you can't count on crossing it late. Rain can also make the bridge slippery, so take your time.
