June: hot and damp

June feels sticky in Chengdu, with highs around 33°C and warm nights. Rain falls on many days, and thick cloud often dims the sky. You'll want flexible plans: duck into the Sichuan Museum or a teahouse in People's Park when showers arrive, then explore Jinli's lanes when it's cooler.

Long, exposed hikes can feel draining in the heat and damp. Save a day trip to Mount Qingcheng for a clearer spell, and expect muddy paths after rain. The weather gets wetter in July, so June is a better bet for outdoor plans.

Festivals and crowds

The Dragon Boat Festival sometimes falls in June. You may spot zongzi, sticky rice dumplings wrapped in leaves, in shops and markets. The date changes each year, so don't assume it will be in town during your visit.

If you hate crowds, go to the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding on a weekday. June is generally quieter than the July and August school-holiday peak, and prices are often lower than in those busy months. Weekends can still draw plenty of local families, especially around the pandas.

Make the day work

Aim for outdoor sights in the cooler parts of the day, then take a slower break through the damp afternoon. The shady paths and teahouses around People's Park suit that pause better than a long walk across open squares.

Travelling with kids? At the panda base, take the shuttle from Panda Avenue metro station to save a sweaty walk to the entrance. Carry a small umbrella for sudden showers; it's handy on the walk between Kuanzhai Alley's courtyards, too.
