February weather in Chengdu

February feels cool, grey and a little damp. Days reach about 15°C, but evenings can drop to 3°C, and cloud often hangs over the city. Rain is light overall, though the air can still feel chilly.

You can spend a comfortable day at the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding or duck into teahouses around People's Park. Qingcheng Mountain is possible, but its damp paths can feel cold underfoot. If you're hoping for blue skies or long outdoor days, March is a better bet.

Lunar New Year plans

Chinese New Year sometimes falls in February, and the date changes each year. When it does, expect festive displays and a busier travel period. The Lantern Festival, held on the fifteenth day of the lunar new year, can also land in February.

Travelling with kids? Panda viewing is a good fit, but holiday crowds can make the base feel much less relaxed. Check the holiday dates before you choose your trip.

Crowds and local tips

Outside the holiday rush, February is generally quieter than spring and autumn, and prices are often lower than in those popular seasons. During Chinese New Year, though, transport and popular sights can get crowded, and some local businesses may close.

For the panda base, take the metro to Panda Avenue station and use the shuttle bus from there. It saves you a long walk in the cold. Afterwards, warm up with a bowl of dan dan noodles in central Chengdu; the chilli and savoury sauce suit a grey afternoon.
