Chongqing Weather in February

February feels damp and grey

Chongqing's February is mild by winter standards, but it can feel chilly. Highs reach 15°C and lows fall to 5°C. Humidity is high, the sky is often cloudy, and sunshine is limited. Rain is fairly light, though damp air can make a walk feel colder than the numbers suggest.

The weather works well for indoor stops between outdoor walks. Explore the Three Gorges Museum, then take the metro to see the famous monorail pass through the building at Liziba. Save long riverside strolls for clearer spells, and don't count on bright views from the hills.

Holidays and crowds

Chinese New Year sometimes falls in February, though its date changes each year. The Lantern Festival, held on the fifteenth day of the lunar new year, may also land this month. Check the calendar for your trip: holiday travel can make trains busy, while some local shops and restaurants close.

If you hate crowds, avoid travelling during the main holiday week. Outside that period, February is generally quieter than the spring and autumn peaks, and prices can be lower. The exception is the holiday itself, when transport and rooms may cost more.

Make the most of your visit

Travelling with kids? Liziba's passing train is an easy, memorable stop, and you can watch from the viewing platform without committing to a long walk. For a cosy meal, try Chongqing hotpot; the chilli-rich broth is especially welcome on a damp evening.

At Hongyadong, the steep lanes and stairways can be slippery after rain. Take your time, and use the lifts where you can. February suits a flexible city break more than a packed outdoor itinerary. If you want clearer skies and warmer days, March is a better bet, though it's wetter.
