March: mild, cloudy days

March feels like a gentle start to spring. Days reach 20°C, while evenings can fall to 10°C. Rain comes on 11 days, and cloud often softens the views, so don't count on clear skyline photos. The weather still suits a walk through Ciqikou's old lanes or a visit to the Three Gorges Museum. For a hill walk on Nanshan, choose a drier day; muddy paths and low cloud can spoil the views.

If you love city walks more than sunbathing, March is a good fit.

Spring colour and local dates

Cherry blossoms may appear around Nanshan Botanical Garden, though bloom times vary. March 8 is International Women's Day, which some local businesses mark with promotions or events. It isn't a major public holiday, so you won't see the city shut down for it.

There's no dependable, citywide March festival to plan a trip around. Instead, you can enjoy spring flowers and spend a rainy spell in the museum district around the Three Gorges Museum.

Quieter than summer

March is one of Chongqing's best months to visit, but it's usually less crowded than the hot summer peak. You'll generally find a calmer feel at popular sights, though weekends can still bring local visitors. Prices are often gentler than in peak summer, but don't expect every hotel to be cheap.

For a practical rainy-day plan, ride the monorail to Liziba and watch it pass through the apartment block. Then head to nearby Jiefangbei for a bowl of hotpot; it's a cosy choice when the damp air makes the city feel chilly.
