December: damp winter days

December feels chilly and clammy in Chongqing. Days reach about 13°C, but evenings can drop to 4°C. The air is often cloudy, with little sunshine, so the cold can feel more noticeable than the numbers suggest. Rain is fairly light, though you may still get a few wet days.

It's a good month for indoor stops such as the Three Gorges Museum, then a hotpot meal in a Jiefangbei restaurant. The Yangtze River cableway is worth a ride, but thick cloud can hide the river views. Keep outdoor plans flexible rather than counting on clear skies.

Quieter streets, festive lights

December is generally quieter than Chongqing's stronger travel months of March and November. You're also ahead of the main Lunar New Year rush, which usually falls later in winter. Hotels and attractions may feel less pressured than during peak periods, though prices vary.

Christmas isn't a public holiday in China, but shopping areas around Jiefangbei often put up seasonal decorations. Don't expect a citywide Christmas festival. If you hate crowds, visit Hongyadong on a weekday; its lit riverside buildings draw plenty of visitors in the evening, even in winter.

Make the most of the damp

Travelling with kids? Choose the Three Gorges Museum for a cloudy afternoon, then take a short walk around nearby People's Square if the weather clears.

For a practical local tip, use Chongqing's Liziba monorail station for the famous train-through-a-building view. The viewing platform is outdoors, so a damp, cloudy day can make the stop less appealing. If visibility is poor, ride the monorail anyway and save the platform for a clearer spell. December's shorter days also mean it's worth keeping riverside viewpoints for daylight, rather than expecting bright evening scenery.
