April weather in Chongqing

April feels mild to warm, with highs around 25°C and cooler evenings near 14°C. But rain falls on 14 days, and cloudy skies are common, so don't expect long, sunny stretches. The weather is good for wandering around Ciqikou's old lanes or taking in the river views from Eling Park.

Rain can make steep steps and stone paths slippery. Save a long walk up Nanshan for a clearer spell, and keep indoor sights such as the Three Gorges Museum in mind for wet afternoons. Compared with March, April is warmer but much wetter.

What's on, and how busy is it?

Qingming Festival usually falls in early April. It's a time when families visit and tend graves, and the holiday can bring extra crowds on trains and at popular sights. The dates change each year, so check when it falls before choosing your travel days.

Outside the holiday, April is a shoulder-season month: you'll generally find it less packed than major Chinese holiday periods. Prices can rise around Qingming, but April isn't usually Chongqing's best-weather season; March and November are the top months in the data.

If you hate crowds, avoid travelling over the Qingming break and enjoy Ciqikou on a weekday instead.

Make the most of a rainy day

April's showers suit a flexible city break more than a packed hiking schedule. Take the Yangtze River Cableway when skies are clear for views over the rivers and bridges; in low cloud, the ride may offer less of a panorama. After rain, warm up with Chongqing hotpot, a local favourite that's easy to find around Jiefangbei.

For a practical local tip, use the Liziba station viewing area to watch the train pass through a residential building. It's an easy stop on Chongqing Rail Transit Line 2, and you can duck into nearby shops if a shower rolls in.
