April feels mild and damp in Zigong. Afternoons can reach 25°C, while evenings cool to around 14°C. Rain falls on many days, and cloud often dulls the light, so expect changeable sightseeing rather than long, reliably sunny days.

You can wander the old streets and visit the Zigong Salt Industry Museum between showers. Save outdoor plans for clearer spells, and don't count on a dry day for a long walk. Wet stone steps can be slippery, and May brings more rain and warmer afternoons.

Holidays and crowds

Qingming, the tomb-sweeping holiday, falls in early April, though its dates vary. Many people travel to visit family graves, so transport and popular sights may feel busier around the holiday. Zigong's famous Lantern Festival is usually held around the Lunar New Year, not in April.

April is spring shoulder season: it's generally calmer than the Lantern Festival period. Prices may rise around Qingming, but April isn't usually a major peak month. March and November are also good months to visit, so April doesn't have a clear advantage over them for mild weather.

Make rainy spells count

Families with children may enjoy April's mix of museum visits and short outdoor outings, but keep a flexible day for rain.

A practical local plan: head to the Zigong Dinosaur Museum at Dashanpu on a wet afternoon. It's a substantial indoor stop, and you won't need clear skies to enjoy the dinosaur fossils. On a dry day, pair it with a walk in the city instead. Try salt-baked rabbit, a local Zigong speciality, for dinner; it's known for its savoury, spicy flavour.
