Best Time to Visit Zigong

March and November: the sweet spots

Zigong has two good windows, and they're spring and late autumn. In March it's mild, with highs around 21°C and chilly mornings. November is similar but drier, with only 31 mm of rain. Both months suit walking the old salt-trade streets and the Salt History Museum without sweating through your shirt.

Skies here are grey much of the year. Even in the good months you'll get about two hours of sun a day, so don't expect postcard blue. Do expect soft light and comfortable afternoons. These are also the best months for sampling the city's famously spicy food, like cold-dressed rabbit and salt-heavy stews, because you'll actually want a hot bowl.

Winter lantern season

Zigong is best known for its lanterns. The Zigong International Dinosaur Lantern Festival runs around Chinese New Year, usually in late January or February. Giant glowing animals and scenes fill the Zigong Lantern Park after dark. It's the one time the cold months feel lively.

Winter itself is cool and fairly dry. January and December see only 6 rainy days each. Highs sit around 12 to 13°C, and damp air makes evenings feel colder than the number suggests. Dress warm if you're out for the lanterns. Crowds peak around the Spring Festival holiday, when Chinese families travel, so expect queues at the lantern displays and busy trains.

Travelling with kids? The Zigong Dinosaur Museum is a good rainy or chilly day stop at any time of year. It's built over a real fossil site at Dashanpu.

Summer: hot and wet

From June to September, it's hot, sticky and rainy. July is the wettest month at 204 mm on 21 days, and August is the hottest at 33°C. Nights stay warm, so there's little relief. All four months rate Poor in our scores.

If summer is your only option, plan indoor stops for the afternoon, like the museums, and save outdoor wandering for between showers. Chinese school holidays run through July and August, so the main sights see more families, though Zigong is far quieter than Chengdu.

Spring and autumn in between

April and May warm up fast, and rain becomes frequent, with 15 to 17 wet days a month. October is mild but the greyest month, with only 1.4 hours of sun a day. April and October are fine if you don't mind the odd drizzle. If you hate crowds and heat, they're a decent backup to March and November.
