January feels cool, damp and often grey in Zigong. Daytime highs reach about 12°C, but mornings and evenings can feel chilly. Rain falls on several days, and cloud is common, so don't expect much winter sunshine.

The mild weather suits a slow visit to the Zigong Salt History Museum or the old streets around Fuxi River. You can explore indoors when drizzle sets in. Long outdoor walks may feel less appealing on damp, cloudy days, and the short daylight leaves less time for wandering after lunch.

Lanterns and holiday plans

The Zigong International Dinosaur Lantern Festival is a major winter event. Its dates shift with the lunar calendar, so it may fall in January or later. The displays are best enjoyed after dark, but chilly evenings call for a shorter stroll between viewing areas.

Chinese New Year also sometimes lands in January. If it does, expect more domestic visitors and busy transport, while some smaller businesses may close. Families who enjoy colourful night displays will find the lantern festival a lively change from daytime museum visits.

Crowds and local tips

Away from the festival and New Year break, January is generally quieter than the popular March and November periods. It's winter low season, so you may find better-value stays than during busier months. Festival nights and holiday travel are the exception: crowds and prices can rise.

At the Salt History Museum, give yourself time for the well-preserved Shenhai Well nearby. It's a working salt well with a deep history, and seeing it makes Zigong's salt story feel more tangible. On a wet afternoon, visit the museum first, then see whether the well area feels comfortable for a short walk.
