Chengdu Weather in January

January: grey and chilly

January in Chengdu feels damp and cool, with cloudy skies and little sunshine. Days reach about 11°C, but nights can fall to 1°C. Rain is light and usually brief, so you can still explore, though the chill may linger indoors.

The weather suits a slow visit to Wuhou Shrine, the Sichuan Opera Museum or a cosy teahouse in People's Park. A hotpot meal is especially welcome after a chilly walk. Long days outdoors may feel less appealing, and the cloud can hide views on trips beyond the city.

Holidays and crowds

New Year's Day brings a public holiday, while Chinese New Year sometimes falls in January. Its date changes each year. If it does, expect more domestic travellers, and look for the Spring Festival temple fair at Wuhou Shrine.

Outside holiday periods, January is quieter than Chengdu's popular spring and autumn months. Accommodation can cost less than in those busier seasons, but prices may rise around Chinese New Year. If you hate crowds, avoid the holiday week and enjoy the calmer streets.

A local winter tip

At the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding, cool weather can make pandas more active than they are on hot summer days. The paths can feel cold and damp, though, so keep your visit focused and take a break indoors afterward.

For warmth without rushing, stop at a People's Park teahouse and order a pot of tea. You'll see locals playing mahjong or chatting over cups, even under the grey winter sky.
