October weather

October feels mild and damp in Chengdu. Days reach about 23°C, but frequent rain, heavy cloud and little sunshine can make the city feel cooler than the high suggests. You'll get a break from September's heavier rain, though showers still crop up often.

It's a good month for the panda base, museums and covered tea houses, with comfortable weather for wandering around Kuanzhai Alley. Rain can make paths slippery, so save a Qingcheng Mountain hike for a clearer day. Evenings suit a steaming bowl of hotpot.

Holidays and crowds

China's National Day holiday, known as Golden Week, starts in October. Chengdu's sights and transport can get crowded as domestic travellers arrive, and hotels may cost more than in a quieter month. Outside the holiday, October is generally calmer than this busy week, but it isn't the cheapest time to visit.

If you hate crowds, avoid the Golden Week rush and visit later in the month. The Mid-Autumn Festival sometimes falls in October, but its date changes each year.

Make the most of it

Cloudy days are part of the visit, not a reason to stay indoors. Browse the Sichuan Museum or settle into a tea house in People's Park when rain sets in. At the park's Heming Tea House, you can watch locals play mahjong over cups of tea.

For the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding, check the forecast before you go: rain can make outdoor viewing less comfortable. If you're visiting during Golden Week, expect more people at popular sights and give yourself extra time to get around.
