July is hotter and wetter, while September is cooler and drier. August still brings plenty of rain, and the low comfort score reflects how tiring the heat and humidity can feel.

What to do

Go to the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding, then spend the hotter part of the day in a teahouse in People's Park. The shady paths around Wuhou Shrine also work well between showers. Save long outdoor walks for a break in the rain, and don't count on much sunshine for a day at the park.

If you hate crowds, August may test your patience: Chinese schools are on summer break, and popular sights draw family groups. Prices and demand are generally higher than in quieter months such as March or November.

Qixi, a Chinese festival linked to the lunar calendar, sometimes falls in August. Its date changes each year, so it isn't a fixed August event. Summer break is the more reliable reason you'll see extra visitors around the city.
