December weather

December feels cool, grey and often damp, even though rain is limited. You'll get chilly mornings and evenings, with cloudy skies and little sunshine. The weather works well for teahouses, museums and Sichuan opera, or lingering over hotpot. A walk through People's Park can still be pleasant, but don't count on sunny views or a warm afternoon.

If you're visiting the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding, expect cold outdoor paths; plan time for indoor exhibits too.

Holidays and food

The winter solstice, Dongzhi, falls in December, though its date changes each year. Families mark it with seasonal foods; dumplings are common in northern China, while tangyuan (sweet rice balls) are popular in parts of the south. In Chengdu, a steaming hotpot is a welcome choice on a cold evening. Christmas is visible in some shops and malls, but it isn't a major traditional holiday here.

Travelling with kids? A quiet tea break at Heming Teahouse in People's Park can be a welcome pause after sightseeing.

Crowds and practical tips

December is generally quieter than the popular spring and autumn months, including March and November. You'll likely find fewer visitors at major sights than in peak periods, and prices can be lower than in busier months. The trade-off is a dimmer, colder feel, not a beach or hiking month.

For the panda base, take the metro to Xipu and continue by bus or taxi; check the day's route before you set out. Afterward, warm up with Chengdu-style hotpot, known for its spicy, numbing broth.
