Visiting Chengdu in July
July: hot and damp
July feels sticky in Chengdu. Highs reach 33°C, humidity is high, and rain falls on many days. June is just as hot, but July is much wetter. Expect cloudy skies and short breaks of sunshine, not reliable beach weather.
Long walks around Jinli Ancient Street or the Wuhou Shrine can feel tiring in the afternoon. Keep outdoor sightseeing flexible, and save a teahouse stop in People's Park for a rainy spell. The Sichuan Museum is another good indoor option. If you hate crowds, avoid the busiest parts of the day at popular sights.
Summer holidays
Chinese schools are on summer break, so families travel around the country. Chengdu's Panda Base and the city's main sights can feel busier than in quieter months such as March and November. Hotels and transport can also cost more than in those shoulder-season months.
July doesn't have a major fixed festival that draws visitors to Chengdu. The school holiday is the main calendar factor, so don't expect a citywide event to shape your trip. Rain can also slow outdoor plans, especially around the leafy paths and temples of Qingcheng Mountain.
Make the Panda Base work
For a better visit to the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding, go in the morning, when pandas are more likely to be active. Check the base's visitor information before setting out, since heavy rain can affect outdoor paths.
Travelling with kids? Pair the Panda Base with an easy indoor afternoon, rather than trying to fit in several outdoor sights. A bowl of dan dan noodles can make a satisfying stop back in town, though the chilli may be a lot on a hot, humid day.
