Chengdu Weather in May

May: warm, often damp

May feels like proper spring in Chengdu, but afternoons can get hot. Highs reach 30°C, while evenings cool to around 18°C. Rain falls on 17 days, and thick cloud means you may see little sunshine. Expect sticky spells and sudden showers, rather than long stretches of clear weather.

You can still enjoy the city between showers. Wander through People's Park, sip tea at Heming Teahouse, or explore the covered lanes around Kuanzhai Alley. Save Qingcheng Mountain for a day with a clearer forecast; wet paths can make a hike less pleasant. The panda base is another good morning outing, before the warmest part of the day.

May Day and crowds

Labour Day, also called May Day, brings a public holiday and a busy travel period in China. Chengdu's main sights, including the panda base and Jinli, can feel crowded then. Hotels and transport may cost more around the holiday than during quieter weeks.

If you hate crowds, visit outside the holiday rush. The rest of May is generally less packed than the peak holiday days, though it isn't as quiet as Chengdu's low season. June is wetter and hotter, so May can still work well if you're flexible about rainy days.

Try a Sichuan hotpot meal in the evening, when the cooler air makes sitting over a bubbling pot more comfortable. For a practical local tip, use Chengdu's metro to reach the panda base, then take the site's shuttle bus from the entrance to the main viewing areas. The grounds are large, and that ride can save little legs on a damp day.
