May feels warm and damp in Mianyang. Afternoons can reach 28°C, while evenings cool to around 17°C. Rain falls on many days, and thick cloud often softens the sunshine. You'll still get long daylight, but not much direct sun.

This suits city walks, Sichuan food stops and visits to Yuewang Tower. Fule Mountain is also worth exploring, though its paths can turn slippery after rain. Save longer hikes for a clearer day, and don't count on a sunny afternoon at the viewpoint.

May Day and crowds

China's Labour Day holiday falls in May. Mianyang's popular sights and transport can get busier then, with more families travelling around the country. Hotels and train fares may also rise near the holiday, compared with quieter weeks.

If you hate crowds, visit Fule Mountain or Yuewang Tower outside the holiday period. May is generally less settled than March and April, two of Mianyang's best months, but it's not the busiest time everywhere. Rainy days can make indoor stops a calmer choice.

Make the most of it

With showers spread across the month, keep your plans flexible. Pair an outdoor visit with a meal of Mianyang rice noodles, a local favourite, so a wet spell doesn't derail the day.

At Fule Mountain, take the steps slowly after rain; wet stone can be slick. The climb is still a good way to see the city, but cloudy skies may limit the view. June is hotter and wetter, so May can work well if you're happy to trade reliable sunshine for spring warmth.
