Spring and autumn: the best windows

March and April are the sweet spot. Days go from cool to properly warm, and the rain is light compared with summer. It still drizzles on plenty of days, so you'll want a small umbrella for walks along the Fu River. Skies are often grey and hazy, which is normal for the Sichuan Basin.

October and November are the second window. October is a bit damp and cloudy. November is calmer, with far fewer wet days. These months suit city strolls, hotpot nights and day trips out to Yuezhong Mountain or Xiqiao Park.

Summer: hot, wet and sticky

June to September all rate Poor, and July is the worst. It's the wettest month, with rain on 21 days. The air feels heavy, and nights stay warm. Hiking trails turn muddy, and heavy downpours can disrupt plans.

If you must come in summer, stick to indoor stops like the Science City museums and the Mianyang Museum. Eat cold noodles and the local rice noodles, known as Mianyang mi fen, to keep cool. August is a little drier and brighter than July, but not by much.

Winter: mild, quiet and dry

December and January are the driest months. They're cool, not freezing, and the rain is rare. The sun is weak, so it often feels gloomy rather than crisp. Dress for damp chill, especially indoors, where heating is patchy.

This is the quietest time for tourism, apart from Chinese New Year. In late January or February, many shops and restaurants close for a few days. Families travel, trains fill up, and the city feels empty on the holiday itself. If you want a local festival feel, the Lantern Festival, about two weeks after New Year, brings lights and sweet rice dumplings called tangyuan.

Crowds here are never huge. The busiest spells are the national holidays: Chinese New Year, the early-May Labour Day break and the first week of October. Book trains early for those dates. Outside them, you'll often have sights to yourself.
