Warm, showery days

May feels warm and damp in Neijiang. Afternoons can get sticky, and rain falls on many days, often beneath a grey sky. You'll have long daylight hours, but limited sunshine, so don't count on a bright, dry day for every outing.

A walk around Daqian Garden or a visit to the Zhang Daqian Memorial Museum works well between showers. Keep outdoor plans flexible, and save a rainy spell for the museum or a tea stop. The hills and paths can feel slippery after rain, so May isn't ideal for a long countryside hike.

May Day and crowds

China's Labour Day holiday brings more domestic travellers to Neijiang, especially around the holiday itself. Popular sights and transport can feel busier then, and fares or hotel rates may rise compared with quieter weeks. Outside the holiday, May is usually less crowded than major travel periods, though it isn't as calm as the low season.

Families may prefer a weekday visit to Daqian Garden, when the paths are often more peaceful. For lower prices and a quieter feel, March or November are better choices overall.

A local tip

Neijiang is known for sugar, and its food gives you a good reason to duck indoors when rain sets in. Try a local bowl of beef noodles at a restaurant near the old city centre, rather than relying on outdoor sightseeing to fill the day.

May is warmer and wetter than April, and June is hotter and rainier still. That makes this a useful middle ground if you can avoid the Labour Day rush. Keep your route flexible: visit a museum when showers arrive, then head back out when the rain eases.
