You can still enjoy Dazhou's city streets, tea shops and indoor sights between showers. A gentle wander around the old streets suits the weather better than a long day on exposed hills. Mount Batai is a tougher choice if clouds hide the views or rain makes trails slippery. March is warmer and wetter, so February can be a useful in-between month.

Holidays and crowds

Chinese New Year sometimes falls in February, and the Lantern Festival may also land that month. Dates change each year. If your visit overlaps, expect family travel and busy transport, while some smaller shops and restaurants may close for a few days.

If you hate crowds, avoid travelling during the main Spring Festival rush.

Outside the holiday period, February is winter low season, so Dazhou generally feels quieter than peak travel months. Prices can be more manageable than during major holiday travel, but don't expect every hotel or train fare to stay low around New Year.

Keep your plans flexible: a damp afternoon works well for a long lunch featuring Dazhou's famous Dengying beef, thin slices of cured beef that make a handy local snack. You'll find it sold in shops around town, so it's easy to pick up for the train home.

For Mount Batai, ask locally about trail conditions before setting out. Cloudy weather can cut the views, and wet paths make a long walk less appealing. Save the hills for a clearer spell, and use a grey day to explore the city instead.
