January feels cool and grey

Dazhou's winter days are cool, and evenings can feel chilly. January averages a high of 11°C and a low of 2°C. There's some rain, but it falls on only a handful of days. The bigger issue is cloud: skies are often overcast, with limited sunshine.

That still leaves room for city sights. Visit Dazhou Museum or walk around Phoenix Mountain when the weather is dry. Save longer outdoor trips for clearer spells, and don't count on sunny views from the hills. January isn't the best month for a bright, warm break; March and November are better choices.

New Year, with a holiday caveat

New Year's Day is a public holiday in China. The Lunar New Year, also called Spring Festival, can fall in January, though it often lands in February. Its travel rush can change the feel of your trip, with busy transport and some local businesses closing for family time.

If you hate crowds, avoid travelling during the Spring Festival rush. Outside that period, January is generally quieter than busier spring and autumn months. Hotels and transport may feel less pressured, but holiday demand can change that quickly.

Make the most of a cold day

With damp air and little sun, a relaxed indoor stop can be more appealing than a long walk. Try Dazhou's famous dengying beef, thinly sliced dried beef often served as a snack, at a local restaurant. It's a good way to warm up between sights.

Travelling with kids? Keep Phoenix Mountain to a dry spell, since the climb can feel less fun in mist or drizzle. For a city day, pair a short walk with the museum and a meal instead of trying to fit in a long outdoor outing.
