Visiting Guilin in June
June feels wet
Guilin's June days are warm, sticky and often cloudy. Rain falls on 23 days, and the air stays humid, so sightseeing can feel tiring between showers. The Li River and karst peaks may disappear behind low cloud, but the landscape can look moody and green when the skies clear.
Long, exposed outings are a gamble. Keep time for a short walk around Elephant Trunk Hill or a meal in town, where you can duck inside if rain sets in. The Reed Flute Cave is another useful rainy-day stop. June isn't the month for reliable sunshine on a Yangshuo cycling day.
Festivals and crowds
The Dragon Boat Festival falls in June in some years, but its date follows the lunar calendar. You may see holiday events and enjoy zongzi, sticky rice wrapped in leaves. The festival can bring extra domestic visitors, so check the date before choosing your travel days.
Outside the holiday, June is generally quieter than Guilin's popular October-to-December period. It's also before China's main summer school break, which usually starts in July. Rain keeps demand lower than in the drier autumn months, though festival dates can be busier.
If you hate crowds, avoid travelling over the Dragon Boat Festival.
Make the river plan flexible
A Li River cruise from Guilin to Yangshuo is still possible, but heavy rain can affect river conditions and visibility. Confirm the sailing with your hotel or the cruise operator on the day, rather than building your whole visit around a perfect view. If clouds close in, spend time in Yangshuo's West Street instead; its shops and cafes make an easy sheltered break.
Guilin gets much more rain in June than in May, while July is warmer but drier. Keep one indoor stop handy for wet afternoons, and treat clear spells as a bonus for river views.
