Visiting Guilin in August
August feels sticky
Guilin in August is hot, humid and often cloudy. Highs reach 31°C, with lows around 24°C, and the air can feel heavy by midday. Rain falls on 16 days, so expect showers to interrupt some outings. August gets less rain than July, but more than September.
You can still enjoy a Li River cruise, especially when clouds soften the karst peaks. In town, keep the shady paths at Seven Star Park for cooler parts of the day. Long hikes can feel draining in the heat, and wet paths make steep trails less appealing.
Summer crowds
Chinese school holidays bring plenty of families to Guilin in August. The Li River boats and popular spots around Yangshuo can feel busy, while prices tend to be higher than in quieter months. October to December are better choices if you want cooler sightseeing and fewer summer visitors.
If you hate crowds, spend time around the Two Rivers and Four Lakes after day-trippers have left the central sights. August also falls near the Qixi Festival in some years, but its date follows the lunar calendar. Don't count on a particular event during your visit.
Make rain work
Keep your plans flexible: a passing shower can make the karst hills look misty, but heavy rain may disrupt river trips. Check local conditions before setting out on a Li River cruise, and use a rainy spell to explore Guilin's Reed Flute Cave.
For a local meal, try Guilin rice noodles on Zhengyang Pedestrian Street, where you can duck in between showers. The cave is a practical backup because it's indoors, while the street gives you an easy place to eat near central sights.
