August: hot and wet

August in Hezhou feels sticky, with warm nights and frequent rain. The high reaches 31°C, humidity is high, and there's only a little sunshine most days. Rain falls on 19 days, so showers can interrupt sightseeing and turn paths muddy.

You can still explore Huangyao Ancient Town, especially its old lanes and stone bridges, but wet stones get slippery. Keep mountain walks at Gupo Mountain flexible; heavy rain can make trails unpleasant. For a slower day, browse the covered streets and tea shops in town.

Events and crowds

There's no major fixed public holiday in Hezhou in August. Qixi, a traditional festival for couples, sometimes falls this month, but its date changes each year. Don't count on a large local event.

School holidays can bring Chinese families to popular sights, though August is generally less busy than Hezhou's best months, October to December. You may find accommodation and sightseeing easier on the wallet than in autumn, but prices can still rise at busy attractions during the summer break.
