July: sticky and showery

July in Hezhou is hot, humid and often cloudy. Days reach 31°C, and nights stay warm around 24°C. Rain falls on many days, though showers don't always last all day. The air can feel heavy, and you may get caught in a sudden downpour.

June is wetter, but July still brings frequent rain. August is just as hot and slightly wetter. Treat outdoor plans as flexible: a clear spell can suit a visit to Huangyao Ancient Town, while a wet afternoon is better spent over a bowl of Hezhou-style oil tea. The tea is a local savoury drink, often served with snacks.

Make room for rain

Gupo Mountain's forest trails are lovely in cooler weather, but July's humidity and slippery paths can make a long hike tiring. Avoid planning a full day on the trails if rain is forecast. Short walks and indoor stops are easier to adjust.

If you hate crowds, avoid weekends at Huangyao, when day-trippers can fill its old lanes. Travelling with kids? Keep outdoor sightseeing short, with a place to cool off between stops.

Summer break and costs

July has no major nationwide public holiday, but Chinese schools are on summer break. Families travel then, so popular sights can feel busier than in October to December, Hezhou's more comfortable visiting months. Accommodation and transport may also cost more than in quieter autumn months, especially on weekends.

For Huangyao, check local weather before taking the bus from Hezhou. Heavy rain can make the journey and stone-paved lanes less pleasant. Pack a small umbrella for the old town's narrow streets, where it's handy when showers pass through.
