Cool, damp days

February feels cool and often cloudy in Hezhou. Afternoons can reach 18°C, but mornings and evenings feel much colder. Rain falls on around 10 days, and the air can feel damp even when it isn't raining.

It's a good month for slow visits to Huangyao Ancient Town, where you can wander its lanes and covered bridges between showers. Gupo Mountain is still worth seeing, but wet paths can make hikes slippery. Save longer walks for clearer spells, and don't count on sunny views: skies are cloudy much of the time.

Lunar New Year changes

The Lunar New Year sometimes falls in February, though its date changes each year. Around the holiday, local transport and family-run businesses may be busier or close for a few days. Huangyao can draw more visitors then, so check opening arrangements for the places you most want to see.

If you hate crowds, avoid the holiday period and visit on ordinary weekdays. Outside that peak, February is generally quieter and less in demand than the popular October-to-December season. Prices can be lower than in those busy months, but holiday travel may push them up.

Tips for Hezhou in February

February is warmer than January, but wetter than January and much less rainy than March. You'll get a better feel for the town than for a beach-style getaway, and there's no need to fill every day with outdoor plans.

Travelling with kids? Keep a flexible day for Huangyao's old streets and pause under the covered bridges if rain starts. Try Hezhou's oil tea, a local savoury drink, in town; it's a cosy break on a grey afternoon. For Gupo Mountain, ask locally which trails are open after rain.
