Hezhou Weather in May

May feels wet

May is warm, damp and often overcast in Hezhou. The high reaches 28°C, but frequent rain and high humidity can make afternoons feel sticky. Rain falls on 23 days, and there's little sunshine on average.

You can still enjoy Huangyao Ancient Town's lanes and old bridges between showers. For Gupo Mountain, wet paths and cloudy views can make longer hikes less appealing. Keep your plans flexible, and save indoor stops for rainy spells.

May Day crowds

China's May Day public holiday brings more domestic visitors to popular sights, including Huangyao. Expect busier lanes and more competition for rooms around the holiday. Outside that busy spell, May is generally less crowded than the peak autumn months.

If you hate crowds, visit Huangyao on a weekday outside the holiday period. Prices can rise during the holiday compared with quieter days, though May isn't usually Hezhou's peak season. October to December are the most popular months overall.

Make room for rain

May's long daylight hours don't guarantee a sunny day. With cloud cover and frequent showers, a scenic drive or a relaxed meal may work better than a full day on exposed trails. Try local oil tea, a savoury drink made with tea, ginger and other ingredients, in a Hezhou restaurant.

Travelling with kids? Keep Huangyao's slippery stone lanes in mind, especially after rain. Take care on the steps beside the old buildings, and don't rush across the bridges. A short wander can still be lovely when the rain eases.
