That's comfortable weather for walking Huangyao Ancient Town's lanes or exploring the old streets in Hezhou. Gupo Mountain is also an option, though cloud and cool conditions can make long mountain outings less appealing. Save outdoor plans for clearer spells, and don't count on a warm, sunny beach-style break.

Crowds and costs

December is one of Hezhou's better months for a visit, but it's winter rather than peak summer travel season. Huangyao can still draw more visitors on weekends than on weekdays. Rooms and tours may be easier to find, and sometimes cheaper, than during busier holiday periods, though prices vary.

Take a weekday trip to Huangyao if you want quieter lanes and easier photos of its old stone bridges. After rain, the paving can be slippery, so slow down, especially near the streams.

For a cosy evening, look for local Guilin rice noodles or Hezhou's snails with chicken, a regional dish. Choose somewhere busy with local diners, since that's usually a good sign the food is fresh.
