April: mild, damp days

April feels mild rather than hot, with highs around 25°C and cooler evenings. But rain falls often, and heavy cloud can make the day feel gloomy. It's a good month for wandering Huangyao Ancient Town's old lanes or visiting Hezhou's karst scenery between showers. Long hikes on Gupo Mountain are less reliable: wet paths and low cloud can spoil the views.

If you're hoping for sunny days by a pool, April may frustrate you. May is wetter still, but April already brings plenty of rain.

Qingming and spring travel

Qingming, the Tomb-Sweeping holiday, usually falls in early April. Families visit ancestral graves, and the holiday can bring a short travel rush across China. It's a real part of the season, but don't expect a major Hezhou festival built around it.

Outside that holiday, April is generally quieter than the popular October-to-December season. You may find Huangyao's lanes calmer and rooms less in demand than during autumn's peak, though local holiday traffic can change that. Prices aren't guaranteed to be low, so compare dates if you can.

April's damp weather suits a slow visit more than a packed sightseeing schedule. Explore Huangyao when the rain eases, then pause for a bowl of local oil tea, a salty, savoury drink often served with snacks. Cloudy spells can also make a relaxed town day feel more pleasant than a long climb.

A useful local tip: Huangyao's stone lanes get slick when wet, so take care on the steps and uneven paving. If you're heading to Gupo Mountain, ask locally about trail conditions before setting out; rain can make a hike harder than the mild air suggests.
