Guilin Weather in December

December weather

Guilin feels cool and often damp in December. Days reach 15°C, but evenings can fall to 5°C. Rain comes on several days, and cloud often softens the mountain views. You'll get some sun, but don't expect clear skies every day.

It's still a good month for sightseeing. Walk around Elephant Trunk Hill, explore Reed Flute Cave, or take a Li River cruise when the weather's settled. The cave gives you a welcome break from drizzle. Skip swimming and don't count on long, sunny afternoons at the river.

Winter visits

December is part of Guilin's quieter winter season, with fewer visitors than the busy summer months and October's National Day holiday period. Prices are often gentler than in peak travel months, though they can rise around Chinese New Year, which falls in January or February.

The winter solstice, called Dongzhi, is observed in December. Families gather for a meal, though it's not a major sightseeing festival in Guilin. If you hate crowds, December's a calmer time to see the city's main sights.

Make the most of it

Bring a warm outer layer for the damp evenings, especially if you're heading to the riverside. The weather can feel colder than the thermometer suggests when you're out by the water.

For a cosy local meal, try Guilin rice noodles, served in shops around Zhengyang Pedestrian Street. If rain sets in, make Reed Flute Cave your main stop and save the Li River scenery for a clearer spell. December's shorter days also mean it's worth keeping your plans close to the city rather than trying to fit in a long outdoor day.
