Visiting Guilin in January
January feels damp and chilly
Guilin's winter is cool, often cloudy and damp. January averages a high of 14°C and a low of 4°C, with rain on 11 days. The chill can linger, so the karst peaks around the Li River may look misty rather than clear.
That soft, foggy scenery can be lovely from the riverbank or a boat, but don't count on bright views. Save long outdoor walks for a dry spell. Reed Flute Cave is a useful stop on grey days, while Guilin's covered sights offer shelter from showers.
Quiet days, with a holiday caveat
January is usually quieter than Guilin's popular October-to-December period. You'll often find a calmer feel around Elephant Trunk Hill and the city centre, with less pressure on rooms and tours than in busier months.
The main exception is Chinese New Year, also called Spring Festival. Its date changes, and it sometimes falls in January. When it does, domestic travel surges and some businesses close or shorten their hours. January 1 is also a public holiday, though it's generally a smaller travel peak.
If you hate crowds, avoid the Spring Festival travel rush and enjoy the quieter weeks instead.
Make the most of a grey day
Guilin rice noodles, or mifen, are a warming local meal after a chilly wander. Try them in the city centre, where noodle shops make an easy stop between sights. For a practical route, pair a visit to Reed Flute Cave with nearby West Hill Park, rather than spending a whole damp day on exposed river paths.
January is not the best month for reliable sunshine or a full day outdoors. Keep the Li River cruise flexible, and choose it when the sky opens up. The damp air can make the cold feel sharper, so give yourself indoor breaks between Guilin's hills and riverside sights.
