Shaoguan Weather in May

May: warm and very wet

May feels warm, sticky and often overcast in Shaoguan. The high reaches 29°C, while rain falls on 21 days and humidity sits at 85%. With little daily sunshine, you may get a bright spell, then clouds and rain again.

Sightseeing still works, but keep your plans flexible. Nanhua Temple is a good choice for a rainy spell, while Danxia Mountain's red cliffs can look striking beneath low clouds. Wet paths can be slippery, so skip steep hikes when rain is falling hard. A long outdoor day may feel tiring in the damp air.

Holidays and crowds

Labour Day, also called May Day, brings a national holiday period in China. Popular sights such as Danxia Mountain can be much busier then, with more pressure on transport and rooms. Outside the holiday, May is usually quieter than Shaoguan's October-to-December peak, and prices are often lower. Expect holiday prices to rise, though.

If you hate crowds, avoid the May Day break and visit on ordinary weekdays.

Make room for rain

June is even wetter, so May isn't the rainiest month, but it's still a poor pick for guaranteed sunshine. Rather than building your trip around a full day on the trails, leave room to swap in indoor sightseeing or a slower meal when showers set in.

At Danxia Mountain, check conditions before setting off on the steps around Elder Peak. The stone can be slick after rain, and cloud may hide the views. If the weather turns, head back to Shaoguan and try local rice noodles instead.
