Nanhai Weather in May

May: hot and very wet

May feels sticky in Nanhai, with warm nights and frequent rain. Showers fall on many days, and thick cloud leaves little bright sunshine. You can still visit Foshan Ancestral Temple or explore Nanhai's museums, but keep outdoor plans flexible. Heavy rain can make paths at Xiqiao Mountain slippery, so save its hikes for a clearer day.

If you hate crowds, avoid travelling during China's May Day holiday, when popular sights and transport can get busy.

Events and crowds

May Day brings a national holiday in early May. Expect more local visitors and higher demand for transport and hotels around the holiday; outside it, May is generally quieter than the popular November-to-February travel season. Rain also makes it a less comfortable month for long days outdoors.

The Dragon Boat Festival sometimes falls in May, depending on the lunar calendar. If it does, look for dragon boat races and festival foods such as zongzi, sticky rice wrapped in leaves. The festival can also fall in June, so don't count on May events every year.

Make the most of a wet day

Aim for shorter outdoor visits between showers, then spend the stickier parts of the day somewhere sheltered. Nanhai's Qiandeng Lake area has places to eat and take a break, while Foshan Ancestral Temple offers a closer look at local history and lion dance traditions.

At Xiqiao Mountain, check conditions before heading up to Nanhai Guanyin Temple. Rain can turn the trails slick, and cloud may hide the views. If the paths are wet, enjoy a meal in the area instead and save the climb for a drier visit.
