May weather

May feels hot, sticky and often wet in Dongguan. Highs reach 30°C, with humidity at 83%. Rain falls on 21 days, and the sky is cloudy much of the time. Showers can interrupt a day out, so outdoor plans are less reliable than in the drier months.

You can still visit Keyuan Garden, but allow time to duck into its covered halls when rain sets in. For a city day, Dongguan's museums and shopping centres are easier choices than a long walk. Beaches aren't a good bet here; the weather is damp, and Dongguan is inland.

Holidays and crowds

China's Labour Day holiday falls in early May. Popular sights and transport can get busy as people travel, and prices may rise around the holiday. Outside that period, May is generally quieter than the November-to-February high season, though it's not as comfortable for sightseeing.

If you hate crowds, avoid travelling during Labour Day and visit Keyuan on a weekday instead. The Dragon Boat Festival can also fall in May, depending on the year. If it does, look out for races and rice dumplings, called zongzi.

Make May work

Compared with April, May is wetter and a little hotter. June is wetter still, so May can suit you if you're choosing between those two months. But the low comfort rating is fair: long outdoor walks can feel tiring in the muggy air.

Travelling with kids? Keep a rainy-day option near your route. Dongguan Rail Transit Line 2 links central Dongguan with Humen, where the Opium War Museum offers an indoor stop. It's a useful way to make a sightseeing day less dependent on the weather.
