October weather

October feels warm rather than cool in Dongguan, with daytime highs around 30°C and evenings near 20°C. Humidity is still noticeable, but rain eases sharply from September's downpours. Expect showers on some days, not a washout: there's usually room for a walk around Keyuan Garden or an afternoon exploring the old streets of Nancheng.

The comfortable conditions suit sightseeing and outdoor meals. You can also visit Songshan Lake, though its paths can feel sticky in the afternoon. Save long walks for the cooler parts of the day, and don't count on October feeling like Dongguan's cooler season; November is milder.

October events and crowds

China's National Day holiday, also called Golden Week, runs from October 1 to 7. It brings more domestic visitors to popular sights and makes trains and hotels busier, especially around the holiday itself. Dongguan isn't as crowded as nearby Shenzhen or Guangzhou, but you'll notice the change at transport hubs and family attractions.

Mid-Autumn Festival sometimes falls in October, though its date changes each year. You may spot mooncakes in shops and festive displays, but don't assume the holiday lands in this month.

If you hate crowds, visit outside Golden Week.

Costs and local tip

Outside the holiday, October is a pleasant shoulder-season choice. It's generally less crowded than Golden Week and less rainy than September, though prices can rise during the national break. November to February is Dongguan's most popular period for cooler weather, so October can be a useful compromise.

At Keyuan Garden, a Qing-era garden in Guancheng, take your time among its small courtyards and ponds. It's a more comfortable visit than trekking across an exposed park in the midday warmth. For a local meal nearby, look for Dongguan-style roasted goose.
