October feels warm rather than scorching in Guangzhou. Afternoons reach 29°C, while evenings cool to around 20°C. It's less rainy than September, with rain on about seven days, though the humidity can still make walking feel sticky. The mix of sun and cloud works well for exploring Shamian Island, visiting Chen Clan Ancestral Hall, or taking a Pearl River cruise.

Long outdoor plans can still be interrupted by showers, so keep a flexible day for indoor sights such as the Guangdong Museum. November is cooler and drier, so October isn't the best pick if you want crisp hiking weather.

Holidays and crowds

China's National Day holiday, also called Golden Week, falls at the start of October. Popular sights and transport can get crowded as people travel around the country. The Canton Fair also takes place in Guangzhou in October, bringing business visitors to the city's Pazhou area; its dates vary by year.

If you hate crowds, avoid Golden Week and check whether your visit overlaps with the fair. Hotels can cost more during both busy periods than in quieter months. Outside them, October is a shoulder-season choice: generally less crowded than peak holiday weeks, but not as calm as the cooler months.

For an October city break, pair outdoor walks with air-conditioned stops. If rain rolls in while you're near Beijing Road, duck into a nearby shopping centre or choose a museum instead of forcing a long walk.
