Mild days outdoors

February is one of Dongguan's better months for getting around. Days feel mild, while evenings can be cool, especially after rain. Showers are usually brief, but the sky can stay cloudy, so don't count on long sunny spells.

The weather suits a wander through Keyuan Garden, one of Guangdong's classic Lingnan gardens, or a walk beside Songshan Lake. Rain falls on about six days, so there's plenty of time for outdoor plans. Save long, exposed outings for a clearer day; a grey afternoon is better spent at a museum or in a covered shopping centre.

Spring Festival crowds

Chinese New Year, also called Spring Festival, sometimes falls in February. The date changes each year, and the holiday can bring packed trains and busy family attractions. Many smaller restaurants and shops may close for part of the break, too.

If you hate crowds, visit outside the holiday period. Dongguan is generally quieter than during the Spring Festival rush, though travel fares can rise around the holiday. Compared with the wetter months ahead, February is a popular time to visit, so don't expect every part of the city to feel empty.

Travelling with kids? Keyuan Garden makes a gentle outing, with ponds, pavilions and covered walkways if a shower passes through. Its compact paths are easier to manage than a long day outdoors.

For a taste of local cooking, look for Dongguan-style roast goose in a neighbourhood restaurant. During Spring Festival, check whether the place is open before setting out; family-run spots may take a holiday break. The same goes for small shops around the old garden area. A mild day is a good excuse to explore, but keep an indoor stop in mind for cloudier weather.
