Spring Festival crowds

Chinese New Year, also called Spring Festival, sometimes falls in February. When it does, expect busy travel days and crowded stations around the holiday. Some smaller restaurants and shops may close as workers head home, while popular shopping areas can get packed before the break. The Lantern Festival, which marks the end of the holiday period, may also fall in February.

For families, Dongmen is an easy place to sample festive street snacks, but it can feel hectic at peak holiday times. Prices for transport and hotels tend to rise around the main travel rush; away from it, February is generally less pressured than major holiday dates.

Holiday queues can be long, so avoid crossing on the busiest Spring Festival travel days if your plans are flexible.
