Winter and autumn: the easy months

Luohu is part of Shenzhen, right on the Hong Kong border, and the best weather runs from October to February. December is the driest month, with just 25 mm of rain on 4 days. Days are mild, nights are cool but not cold, and the air feels less sticky. October is the sunniest month, with about 5.4 hours a day, and it's still warm enough to feel like summer's tail end.

This is the time for walking. Wander the Dongmen pedestrian street for snacks and shopping, or climb up to the Wutong Mountain trails on the district's edge for views over the city. Evenings are pleasant for a bowl of Teochew-style beef hotpot or a stroll by Shenzhen Reservoir. January and February can feel grey, with fewer than 5 hours of sun, so don't expect postcard skies.

Spring: damp and warming up

March is still rated Excellent, but it's cloudier and wetter than winter. By April the rating drops to Fair. Rain falls on 13 days, and the air gets heavy. Expect drizzle, fog and clothes that never quite dry.

Chinese New Year usually lands in late January or February. Many shops and restaurants close for a few days, and the city empties as migrant workers head home. If you like quiet streets, that's a bonus. Flower markets and temple fairs pop up beforehand, and they're good fun. Travelling by train around the holiday is the real headache, so avoid long trips then.

Summer: hot, wet and sticky

From May to September, it's the rainy season. June is the wettest month, with 290 mm on 24 days. Nights stay around 27°C from June to August, so there's little relief after dark. Storms can be heavy, and typhoons sometimes pass through, especially late in summer. If a typhoon signal goes up, the city shuts down fast, so keep your plans loose.

This is low season for international visitors, so hotels can be cheaper. Mainland families do travel in July and August, though, when school is out. Malls like Luohu's big indoor shopping centres, plus museums, make good rain plans. Come in summer only if you're on a budget or you don't mind being damp.

Which month for which trip

For hiking and long city walks, pick November or December. For a quick border-crossing trip with Hong Kong, October to December is easiest. For quiet streets, try Chinese New Year. If you hate humidity, skip May to September.
