When to go to Hong Kong Island: a seasonal guide
October to February: the sweet spot
This is when Hong Kong Island is at its best. Days are dry and clear, and the air feels lighter. October and November still feel warm, so you can walk the Peak Circle Walk or hike the Dragon's Back trail in a T-shirt. December is the driest month, with just 25 mm of rain.
January and February are cooler, with lows of 12°C and 14°C. Evenings on the Central waterfront need a jacket, but daytime is easy for exploring Sheung Wan and the Mid-Levels escalator. If you hate sweating through your sightseeing, aim for these months.
It's also the busiest time. Hotels fill up around Christmas and New Year, and the harbour fireworks draw big crowds in Tsim Sha Tsui and Central. Chinese New Year, usually in late January or February, brings flower markets, parades and many shops closed for a few days. Travelling with kids? The Christmas lights and winter school break make December lively but pricey.
March to April: warming up and damp
Spring is a mixed bag. March is still rated Excellent, but it gets grey and misty, with rain on about 10 days. By April it's rated Fair, with 13 wet days and sticky air. Views from Victoria Peak can vanish into cloud, so don't bank on a skyline photo.
The upside is fewer tourists. Hong Kong also hosts the Rugby Sevens in the Hong Kong Stadium, usually in spring, which fills hotels and bars. Easter weekends are busy with local families heading out of town.
May to September: hot, wet and stormy
Be honest with yourself: this is the hardest stretch. June is the wettest month, with 290 mm over 24 days. July to September are the hottest, all with highs of 30°C, and the nights stay warm at 25–26°C. It feels sticky even after dark.
Typhoon season runs through this period too. A strong storm can shut transport and close shops for a day, so keep your plans loose. Indoor days are easy here: museums, malls, dim sum in Sheung Wan, and the Star Ferry when the rain lets up.
On the plus side, hotels are often cheaper. Local school holidays run through July and August, so attractions like Ocean Park get family crowds. In June, the Tuen Mun and Cheung Chau areas are known for dragon boat races. September is a bit sunnier, with 5.1 hours a day, but it's still rated Poor.
