August on Hong Kong Island feels hot, sticky and often wet. Daytime highs reach 30°C, and nights stay warm at around 26°C. Rain falls on many days, with heavy showers that can interrupt a walk along the Central–Mid-Levels Escalator or a visit to Victoria Peak. Keep outdoor plans flexible. Malls, museums and the covered walkways around Central work better when rain sets in.

Events and crowds

The Hungry Ghost Festival takes place during the seventh lunar month, which often falls in August. You may see paper offerings and hear Cantonese opera at neighbourhood events, though dates vary each year. August also brings Hong Kong's summer school holidays. Families can make popular indoor sights busier, while the heat and rain put some visitors off outdoor sightseeing.

For families, the Hong Kong Science Museum across the harbour is a handy rainy-day outing, but expect more children during school break.

Prices and practical tips

August is a busy holiday month, so flights and hotels may cost more than in quieter months. It's generally less comfortable for sightseeing than October to February, Hong Kong's best months overall. September stays hot, but it's less rainy than August.

If you're heading to the Peak, take the Peak Tram from Garden Road and spend time indoors at Peak Tower if a downpour starts. For a local meal, duck into a Central cha chaan teng (Hong Kong-style café) for a hot drink and a break from the humidity. Don't plan a long exposed hike on the same day as a wet forecast.
