Mild days outdoors

December is one of Hong Kong Island's most comfortable months. Afternoons reach around 20°C, while evenings can cool to 13°C. Rain is limited, so you can walk the Central streets, ride the Peak Tram or hike Dragon's Back without the sticky heat of summer.

The sea feels chilly for swimming, but it's a good month for coastal walks and harbour views. Take a jacket for the breezy Peak, especially after sunset.

For hikers, December's cooler air makes the climb up Dragon's Back far more pleasant than in humid summer.

Christmas and New Year

Central's Christmas lights and decorations bring a festive feel, and you'll see displays around Statue Square and the Landmark. Christmas Day and Boxing Day are public holidays in Hong Kong. Later in the month, the harbourfront draws crowds for New Year celebrations and the countdown.

The weeks around Christmas and New Year are among the busiest and priciest times to visit. Hotels and popular sights can feel packed, especially in Central and around Victoria Harbour. For a quieter break, visit earlier in December or head to Shek O for a walk by the sea.

Getting around in December

December is high season, but it's still easier to explore on foot than during Hong Kong's hotter months. Leave beach plans flexible: the cooler air and occasional cloud can make a day by the water less inviting.

For a practical Peak visit, take the number 15 bus from Central instead of joining the Peak Tram queue. The winding ride gives you city and harbour views on the way up, and you can walk around Lugard Road once you reach the top.
