Best Time to Visit Dongguan

October to February: the sweet spot

Dongguan's best stretch runs from October through February. October is still warm and the sky finally clears. November is the easiest month of all, with mild afternoons and cooler evenings. December and January are the driest and coolest. Nights drop to about 10°C, so you'll want a jacket after dark, but days are pleasant for walking.

This is the time for outdoor trips. Climb Yinping Mountain for views over the city. Wander the old lanes of Keyuan Garden, a Qing-era garden in Wanjiang. Or stroll the Songshan Lake area, where the paths and lakeside cafés are at their best in clear air. March to April: warming up, getting damp

Spring here is grey and humid. March is still fine, though it rains on about a third of days. By April it's warmer and wetter, and you'll see little blue sky. Factory tours and indoor stops, like the big shopping malls and the Dongguan Museum, work better than hill walks. Expect mist on the hills and a clammy feel indoors.

May to September: hot, wet and sticky

This is the rainy season, and it's honest-to-goodness wet. June is the wettest month, with rain on most days. July is a little drier and August is close behind it. Nights stay warm, and afternoons feel heavy. Storms can roll in fast, and typhoon season peaks from July to September, so keep your plans loose.

The Dragon Boat Festival, usually in June, is the one reason to come. Dongguan's river towns hold dragon boat races, and the sight of crews paddling hard in warm rain is worth a morning. Otherwise, summer suits you only if you're here for business or you don't mind steamy walks between air-conditioned stops.

Crowds and festivals

Dongguan is a manufacturing city, not a holiday resort, so tourist crowds are light all year. The real swings come from Chinese New Year in late January or February. Many workers go home, and some shops and restaurants close for a week or more. The city goes quiet, which some travellers like. Lantern displays and temple visits mark the days around it. If you want every restaurant open, pick November or early December.
