When to go to Huizhou: a seasonal guide

Cool, dry months: October to February

This is the best stretch, and the data backs it up. October, November, December, January and February all rate Excellent. Days are mild, rain is light, and you get the most sunshine in October and December.

By December and January, mornings turn properly cool. Lows drop to about 9°C in January, so you'll want a jacket for early starts on Xihu (West Lake) in the old town. By afternoon it's comfortable for walking. This is also the best time to hike Luofu Mountain, a famous Taoist mountain northeast of the city, because the climbs aren't sticky.

Beach trips are different. Seawater at Xunliao Bay and Shuangyue Bay is cool in winter, so it suits strolls and seafood more than swimming. October and early November are warmer, if you want both.

March and April: damp but quiet

Spring is the in-between season. March rates Good and April Fair. Rain days climb from 11 to 13, and the sun is weak, often hidden behind low cloud.

It's fine for city wandering and long lunches. Try Huizhou's salt-baked chicken and the Hakka dishes, a local cooking style from the region's Hakka people. Mountain views may be hazy, so save big hikes for another month. April is warm enough that you'll notice the humidity.

May to September: hot, wet and sticky

Every month from May to September rates Poor. June is the wettest, with 332 mm over 24 days. That's rain on most days. May, July and August each still see rain on 20 days or more.

It's also the stretch when typhoons can pass through the South China coast, mostly in late summer. Check forecasts if you're heading to the coast. Afternoons feel heavy, with humidity above 80% and highs around 30 to 31°C. Is that a dealbreaker? If you only have summer, plan indoor stops and use the mornings.

Chinese school holidays run through July and August, so domestic families fill the beaches on weekends. Prices and crowds rise then, even when the weather is poor.

Crowds and festivals

The busiest times are Chinese public holidays. Spring Festival (Chinese New Year, usually late January or February) and the National Day break in early October bring many visitors from across Guangdong. Book trains and beach stays early for these weeks.

Outside those holidays, the cooler months are calm on weekdays. Mid-Autumn Festival, in September or early October, is a good time for mooncakes and lantern displays along the lake.
