May weather

May feels hot, sticky and often cloudy in Jiangmen. The high reaches 30°C, and humidity stays high. Rain falls on many days, with frequent showers and a monthly total of 293 mm. That's much wetter than April, though June is wetter still.

You can visit the Kaiping Diaolou between showers, but outdoor sightseeing may feel tiring in the heat. Save long walks around Chikan Ancient Town for a break in the rain. Don't count on a dry beach day or clear views from open countryside.

Holidays and crowds

China's Labour Day holiday falls in early May, bringing more domestic visitors to popular sights such as the Kaiping Diaolou. Transport and hotel prices can rise around the holiday, then ease once it's over. Compared with the cooler, more popular December-to-February season, the rest of May is usually quieter.

If you hate crowds, avoid the Labour Day travel rush and visit the diaolou on a weekday.

Make May work

Rain doesn't have to spoil a Jiangmen visit. Keep indoor time for the Jiangmen Museum or a meal featuring Xinhui chenpi, dried tangerine peel that's a local speciality. Showers can interrupt plans, so leave room to swap a countryside outing for a city stop.

For a practical local tip, check road conditions before travelling from Jiangmen to Kaiping's diaolou villages. Heavy rain can make a rural drive less pleasant, and the scattered towers take time to explore. When the weather clears, you'll get more from wandering the village lanes than rushing between sights.
