Visiting Jiangmen in February
Mild days, damp skies
February is one of Jiangmen's better months for being outside. Afternoons reach about 23°C, while evenings can feel cool at around 13°C. Cloud and humidity are common, and rain falls on several days, so the sky may look grey even when it's mild.
That suits a slow visit to the Kaiping Diaolou, the fortified watchtowers and villages west of Jiangmen. You can explore courtyards and old lanes without summer's stronger heat. Wet paths can make countryside walks less pleasant, though, and cloudy weather may soften the views. Keep a flexible indoor stop, such as the Jiangmen Wuyi Museum, for a rainy spell.
New Year crowds vary
Chinese New Year sometimes falls in February, and the Lantern Festival can too; their dates change each year. If either lands during your visit, expect busy transport and fuller hotels, especially around the holiday. Chikan Ancient Town and family reunion restaurants can also draw more people.
Outside the holiday period, February is generally quieter than peak holiday dates, with fewer visitors than during major travel rushes. Prices can rise sharply around New Year, then ease afterwards. If you hate crowds, avoid travelling on the main holiday dates and enjoy the calmer days before or after them.
A local taste of winter
February is a good time to try Xinhui chenpi, dried mandarin peel famous in Jiangmen. Look for it in Xinhui, where shops sell peel by age and use it in tea, soups and dishes. Ask how it's prepared if you're new to its deep, slightly bitter flavour.
Travelling with kids? The Diaolou villages make history feel tangible, but scattered sights mean you'll spend time travelling between them. Rain can also interrupt a countryside day, so pair a village visit with a meal in Chikan rather than trying to cover too much at once.
