April feels damp

Nanhai is warm in April, but the air often feels sticky and the sky stays cloudy. Highs reach 29°C, and rain falls on many days. Showers can interrupt a visit, while paths may turn slick.

You can still explore Foshan's Nanhai Guanyin Temple or take a shorter walk around Xiqiao Mountain between showers. But long hikes are less appealing when the trails are wet and views are hidden by cloud. Save open-air plans for a dry spell, and keep indoor sights such as Nanhai Museum in mind.

If you hate crowds, avoid travelling during the Qingming holiday.

Qingming brings a rush

Qingming, the spring festival for honouring ancestors, falls in early April. Families visit graves, and many people travel over the holiday. Expect busier roads and popular sites around Nanhai, especially near Xiqiao Mountain.

Outside that holiday, April is generally calmer than the peak months of November to February. It's not a major beach season, and the damp weather can put off some visitors. That may mean a quieter feel than the winter high season, though holiday demand can push up room rates for a short spell. May is wetter, so April can be a useful choice if you want to visit before the heavier rains.

Make plans that bend

A flexible day works best here. If rain sets in, head to Nanhai's Qiandeng Lake area for a walk between showers, or duck into a nearby café. For a local meal, try double-skin milk, a chilled Cantonese dessert that's especially welcome after a sticky afternoon.

If you're visiting Xiqiao Mountain, check the local shuttle arrangements at the entrance before setting off. The mountain is spread out, and a ride can spare you a wet, tiring climb between sights. Keep your plans loose, and you'll get more from Nanhai even when April skies don't cooperate.
