If you hate sticky heat, December is a good month for exploring. Skip plans that depend on swimming or warm beach weather; Nanhai is inland, and evenings can feel chilly.

Clearer, cooler days suit the paths and temples on Xiqiao Mountain. At Qiandeng Lake, you can stroll by the water without November's warmer afternoons. Dongzhi, the winter solstice, falls in December; families in Guangdong often mark it with a meal or sweet tangyuan, glutinous rice balls. It isn't a big tourist festival, so don't expect city-wide celebrations.

Travelling with kids? Nanhai Film and Television City offers a change from long walks, though you'll still want a jacket for the ride home.

Crowds and practical tips

November to February is Nanhai's best stretch for comfortable weather, so December isn't the quietest time of year. Still, it's outside China's major October and Lunar New Year travel peaks. Prices may be higher than in wetter, hotter summer months, but December isn't usually a nationwide holiday rush.

For Xiqiao Mountain, check the bus route from your starting point before you go; the scenic area covers a lot of ground. Keep a warm layer handy for the summit, where it can feel cooler than around Qiandeng Lake.
